more about reiki

what is reiki?

reiki is an ancient Japanese healing modality. comprised of two words, “rei” which refers to spiritual essence, or soul, and “ki” which refers to life force energy. during a reiki session the healer is a conduit for the reiki energy - the universal life force energy - and channels it for the benefit of the person receiving the healing to promote balance, harmony and clearing, physically and energetically.

who can practice reiki?

there are three levels of reiki practitioner:

  • level one (shoden) which is an initiation to the life force energy, after which the individual can practice reiki on themselves for self-healing;

  • level two (okuden) which expands the practitioner’s relationship to the life force energy to include deep emotional and mental healing and distance healing. at this level the practitioner is certified to offer reiki services to the public;

  • level three (shinpinden) which further deepens the practitioner’s relationship to reiki and focuses on mastery and spiritual growth. this level may be split into two sub-levels between reiki master and reiki master teacher (the difference being that a reiki master teacher is able to initiate and attune others).

because reiki is a complementary and alternative therapy, reiki practitioners are not nationally registered through AHPRA (like doctors, nurses, or physiotherapists). however, reiki practitioners - as complementary therapists - fall under the scope of the National Code of Conduct for Health Care Workers.

what to expect at your first reiki session

in person sessions are available at Balanced Healthcare in Flemington via the book now button. if it's helpful, read on for what to expect.

when you arrive at your session, you will have time to settle in and share a little bit about anything going on and anything you might like support with. at this point you will also be able to share any preference for a hands-on or hands-off approach for the hand placements.

after that you will be guided to lie down on your back, exactly as you are, on the treatment table. an eye mask or eye pillow will be placed over your eyes and the session will start with breath. over the remaining time, the reiki practitioner will move through a series of hand placements on your body (or hovering above your body). these placements usually starting around the head, face, and neck, and move down over your heart, belly, sides of your hips, knees and toes. these hand placements are connected to different chakras (energy centres) through your body. the hand placements may vary in order depending on what the person may need.

everyone experiences reiki differently - you may feel a sense of calm or peace, may feel some sensations (heat, warmth, tingling) or ripples of energy being released. you may also fall asleep.

reiki can bring you into a meditative state, so after the healing is complete we will take a few minutes to touch base and debrief.
